On having a sole purpose

I feel as if I could turn all my attention and effort, the entire complex of my mind, to my studies, and ignore everything else that does not hasten this pursuit. But what an embarrassment it would be if I emerged at last from my cocoon and told everyone that I didn’t do very well. Would it not seem as though I were inherently, unchangeably, stupid?
