Forgetting

You said that you have a poor memory; perhaps I should have commented that having a poor memory is not a curse at all; it is a talent which so many unhappy souls wish they had. One’s resilience is measured by one’s ability to forget. And to forget, does not mean to only forget the unpleasant parts of a memory, but to forget it in its entirety; since the pleasantness will give rise to feelings of privation. But to forget is not to forget entirely either; but to suspend the memory, to hold it somewhere above consciousness, such that one can command its return and banish it at one’s fancy.
